There is no purpose in having a website that never gets any visitors or website traffic. Like a ghost town a website with no traffic sits there unloved and unappreciated so if you have a website you want traffic. Visitors turn a website from being a wasted effort into a lively place people want to visit and it also gives you the opportunity to make some profitable ventures happen.

A busy website will be full of people eager for information and a small proportion of those visitors will be happy to pay for something. What that something might be is for you to decide but if you can help your visitors find what they want and make a few dollars too, why would you want to prevent them?

Some people still think the internet should be a pure place where there is no financial incentive or profit and it is a fine theory. In practice most websites take a little bit of money to keep them online. You invest your time and effort into producing the website and if people want to buy things and you can benefit you might as well take the money.

So, having established that we want visitors to our website what can be done to help encourage them to come?

For you or anyone else to visit a website there has to be a reason. There are no doubt a few websites online that will let you click a button and discover a random website but the huge majority of visitors to websites go there because they were pointed there by a link on a website, through a link in an email or a link from a search engine results page. Without links your website will never be found.

Links are the oil that makes the internet engine work. We skip from website to website following links so it is clear that for our website to get lots of internet traffic we need  to have lots of links, or backlinks, pointing visitors to the website.

Getting those links will be the subject of another post but if you visit a blog and feel like commenting you can usually add a link to your website which will show up on the blog when your comment is published and these links do get clicked on when you have said something interesting in your comment so remember to leave your website address in the appropriate entry field on the blog comments form.
