When you publish an article on your website or blog you hope the world will want to come and read it. You can put your heart and soul into that article but at the end of the day, it is the search engines who will decide how much traffic you get and how many people read the article.

The search engines will evaluate your site and the article and in some weird and wonderful way they will decide how important your article is and rate it accordingly.

If you article is similar to other articles in some shape or form it may not be as well rated as if it is seen as being entirely unique after all, nobody wants to see the search results full of several articles that all appear to be saying the same thing in the same way.

For this reason I don't think it is such a good idea to rewrite articles you have already published and post them elsewhere on the internet. You may gain a backlink and backlinks are almost always good but what if your rewrite of the article is seen as being more important than your original article?

You could end up with the article directory or whatever other site you post to taking the search engine result spot you were hoping to get. Computers use algorithms to decide these things so a well respected article directory could well be seen as more important than your site so a similar article could easily push you out of the top search results.

You would, of course, get a decent backlink from a well rated page but that is clearly not as useful as having that page of yours appear in a good position in the search results.

It is a personal opinion but I would resist the temptation to rewrite and spread your versions of an article around the web and instead write a fresh article just for distribution purposes.

Squidstop - Another simple and quick bookmarking site to promote your Hubpages, Squidoo Lens etc.

Your site will be promoted to about 20 different website index sites. You'll see a whole bunch of windows opening, one for each site. Takes just a minute or two to get some handy backlinks. We all want our websites to be popular and have lots of web users visiting them. To assist the popularity of websites backlinks are a big help. One useful way of building backlinks is to sign up for various websites and blogs that give you a profile name. The user names are to be used when you are commenting on their site. Many will have the option of adding a URL for a website address to your profile details and this will be counted as a link back to your site by the search engines. Some people spend a lot of time finding and building these backlinks as they are unlikely to disappear and they can sometimes be on high pageranking websites.

The spammers and black hatters have noticed this too, of course. Before long they started spamming the heck out of websites that offered anyone the opportunity to gain a link. The result of all this computerized spamming was the development of the CAPTCHA system whereby you have to type in the word or phrase shown to demonstrate you are a real person wanting to sign up.

I can see a day coming when the only website visitors that will be able to read the jumble of letters presented will be autobots controlled by computer systems. The only users to be able to get these website profile backlinks will be the computer controlled autobots. I have no idea where will that leave us and what we will do then. It may be we will see clips of video and be asked questions about what happened but the captcha system will need to be very sophisticated so it can understand a natural language reply.

It is in the nature of computer programs and computer systems that they are developed and get better and better at what they do. We poor humans are stuck with the eyes and brains we are born with. We can only hope that there will be some new development that makes it easier to tell a human from an autobot. To be honest I think that is unlikely to happen. Whatever they come up with you can be sure computer programers will find a way to overcome it and us poor humans will be forever struggling to prove we are a real person.

It is important to get backlinks to your sites. If you have been following this blog you should know this by now. First it helps the search engines find your website and web pages but secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it adds importance to your site.

It makes a lot of sense that if a lot of different websites have a link pointing back to your site it would suggest your site is a valuable resource that is worth looking at. The search engines figure that if all these other websites rate your site enough to put a backlink to your site they should rank your site higher than others about the same subject that have fewer links pointing to them.

There is an important fact about ranking websites in the search engines hidden in that last paragraph and it is this... You do not have to make the best website in the world - you just have to make it better than your competitors sites. It is all about what the competition are doing and how they are able to convince search engines their site is better than yours and what you can do to change the 'opinion' of the search engines about the importance of your webpage.

So when it comes to links the search engines are always going to look at where the links are coming from and if there is anything odd about the number or the types of sites displaying those links.

Now, DOFOLLOW links are specifically saying to the search engine spiders, "follow this link because it matters" while NOFOLLOW links are saying here is a link but it is not so important to follow. The idea came from Google and it was to reduce the transfer of pagerank to only those links the webmaster considered important.

A lot of people worry that many of the links pointing to their site may be nofollow links which means they don't count with Google and other search engines. I believe they do count but in a different way.

What do you think they will make of a whole bunch of links that are all Do Follow links? I am pretty sure it would look odd to anyone, or any search engine autobot, to see ONLY DOFOLLOW links pointing at any site. The links will still count as links but they do not transfer any pagerank. You still get a credit for a link pointing to your site but perhaps more importantly it makes the linking look far more natural and organic.

If I were a search engine and I saw only dofollow links to a site I would think there was something odd about that because it is not likely to happen naturally from webmasters linking to your site. You would expect some to be dofollow and some to be nofollow. The conclusion must be that while dofollow links are best you should have a mixture of the two types of links pointing towards your site.

Most comments you leave on blogs are likely to use nofollow backlinks but many savvy webmasters use do follow links to encourage visitors to leave comments. You can find various software programs to help you find these sites but do remember to use other, no follow, sites as well so everything will appear natural to the search engines.

Before the internet appeared on the scene keywords would probably have been thought of as the important words in a speech or article but now keywords have a similar but far more important role.

We need to know what people are looking for BEFORE we start writing that superb article for our website.

For some time now it has been possible to make use of the Google Keyword Tool to give you a lot of ideas but it has something of a reputation for inaccuracy when it comes to the numbers and it is limited in how many results it supplies you with. It is a whole lot better than nothing but we need something better to know what popular and more obscure search terms people really use.

Now the search engines care about this too. They want to make life easier for people using their search engines so they provide hints on what you might be searching for. When you start typing a search phrase on the main search engine pages it will pop up a list of things you might be searching for. These are lists of pages that people typed in before so we know these are popular search terms. If only we could capture all that valuable information.

The latest version of WordPress Version 3.0 has been released and you are looking at it. I just upgraded and it all went smoothly and all appears to be working just fine. The dashboard looks very similar to 2.9.2 but there is a lot more under the hood to be discovered.

The first thing I noticed which is a very welcome improvement is the simple update of multiple plugins which will be a bit of a timesaver for those who have lots of blogs to update when you discover several plugins have been updated since you last looked, which seems to happen to me quite often. It's telling me I have eleven to update here right now!

One welcome improvement is a change to the default worldpress theme. The new one, called Twenty Ten, is a very smart looking theme that looks great yet remains simple and clean.

We talk about building traffic to our websites but the reality is we are trying to build up the popularity of the website. We need to make the website interesting enough that people have a reason to visit.

You can copy and past some of the content from a sales page on Amazon or Clickbank and add your affiliate link but what does that page offer a visitor that makes the page stand out in the search engines?

If you want to get the free traffic from search engines your page needs to be different. Forget about duplicate content penalties and whether they really exist or not. The true penalty is that if you have the same page as several other people there is no reason for the search engines to put your page in front of the others.

The last thing the search engines like Google want to do is display a page of very similar results. They go to great lengths to provide accurate and appropriate results because they know the person searching does not want ten results all giving the same information.

If you do something different and offer a slightly different interpretation of that same information together with your own opinions on the product or service you have a chance of making your page stand out from all the others.

You are reading this page because it offers you my opinion of a subject. You would not read it if it was the same as five other pages you already read today. It may not make the first page of the search engines for any particular term but at least it is different.

Search engines do not hate you and they are not trying to prevent you achieving success with your online business. It may feel like that sometimes but the reality is that they are in business too and their business is satisfying the people who use their websites so they continue to use them again and again.

You should try to do the same. Make sure that your pages offer your visitor something worth looking at. Make sure that your visitors would be happy to use your site again another time. Offer them a worthwhile experience.

Time seems to be in short supply these days because there are so many things we do and ways of using it. Most people do not want to spend their lives reading junk on the internet. Most want to find what they are looking for quickly and easily so, if your site can help them achieve that aim and they either click on an advert or buy a solution through your website both you and they will be happy.

All the backlinks in the world don't make a web page worth visiting so make sure that whatever page you are promoting with articles, blog comments and all the other ways people promote websies, just make sure there is something worthwhile for the visitors and web traffic that you get.
