What Is Going On With Google Panda Updates?

Google has become the major player in the search pages used by the majority of the Western world. This has placed it in a significant position of power and changes lately make you wonder if that power is beginning to be missused, intentionally or otherwse. Since the first Panda updates back in the Spring websites have been hit left right and center. In many cases these are decent websites that desreve to appear in a decnt ranked position in the search results but good sites have been almost wiped out by the changes Google has made.

It is hard to see what the benefits are. There are many reports of scraped and copied content appearing in a much higher ranked position than the original authors content. It makes no sense.

The search engiines claim to always be looking for the most rellevent results for their customers and, I guess, for other reasons sometimes the copied content looks better to them. With a few additional keywords sprinkled around the page like fairy dust a copied article may seem to be a better result to the search engine bots. It is totally unfair on the original author though and arguably providing a less impressive website for the search engine user to visit.

Many people would claim that the whole debacle of the Panda updates has been a disaster for Google, for their customers and for the website owners who put a lot of effort into producing decent articles and information for their website visitors.

Hubpages is an example of a good site that has thousands of users who publish articles on the website and in exchange get a percentage of any advertising payments. There are a large number of excellent authors providing very good quality content. There are thousands of well researched and well written articles that any visitor would be delighted to discover and read.

The first Panda update decimated the traffic to the hubpages website. The further updates, and there have been several, have done little to help Googles users find the good quality sites that exist on Hubpages website. The reverse is true.

The owners of the Hubpages website have taken all sorts of steps to try to clean out any poor quality hubs. They have stopped people linking to anything that might be seen as poor quality site. The restricted sites include such established players as clickbank presumably due to the large numbers of make money today schemes offered there alongside the good quality ebooks, videos and CDs.

A recent move to using subdomains on Hubpages appeared to have turned things around but in the last week or so many of the good quality hubpages have disappeared from the search engine results. Who knows what the reason is this time. It may be that since the subdomains have all suddenly appeared Google have sandboxed them for a few months thinking their sudden appearanc is suspicious.

Who knows what is going on in the great google mind in the sky. Whatever their intentions when they introduced the Panda updates it seems that the effects have been a disaster for their search results and for thousands, and perhaps millions, of enthusiastic authors of webpages and articles all over the world.

It is depressing to find that putting the effort in to writing good quality articles is wasted. Google does not appear to want quality. Their robotic analysis appears to favor junk over quality. It is so disheartening to find that thanks to a damn computer the common sense decisions of what is good or not has been turned on its head. No longer is quality a good thing. Rubbish is now better just so long as it has the features that the google robots are looking for. It could be complete jibberish but that would not seem to matter in the eyes of Google.

None of us knows for sure what it is that causes Google to rate one page higher than another. It may be that the pages with videos from Youtube get a better ranking because Google owns youtube. It could be the number of keywords or the variety of similar keywords. Perhaps it is down to the percentage of keywords compared to the number of words on a page. We simply don't know but in my opinion, at the moment, Google is not doing a very good job for their customers. Maybe having poor search engine results means they get more adwords clicks on the search pages.

There are businesses that provided a perfectly good service for their visitors who have been decimated by these changes and many decent poeple are suffering thanks to Google and its whims. Such irresponsibility is to be expected. Google is a private company. They have no duty the the world other than their shareholders and it may be the changes have been very profitable but it has made the internet a less useful place for the users and has made producing good quality content a waste of time for website owners and authors. Let us hope that for the good of the internet Google changes their direction and begins to put quality first before we all disappear in a swamp of poor quality webpages that the intoduction of Adsense started.

There are plenty of article directory websites you can upload your own unique content to and include a backlink pointing back to your own website.

This trade off is fair for both sides. The article directory gets content for their website and you get a decent backlink pointing to the webpage you wish to promote.

There are thousands of these article directories out there. The biggest are probably ezine articles and go articles but they all carry the same benefits though the bigger ones are higher authority websites but there are so many thousands of pages the link juice may be spread more thinly.

There are plenty of smaller article directory website, such as Headflip.com which may well grow over time and allow your well established article to gain considerable weight and authority in the long term.

When you publish an article on your website or blog you hope the world will want to come and read it. You can put your heart and soul into that article but at the end of the day, it is the search engines who will decide how much traffic you get and how many people read the article.

The search engines will evaluate your site and the article and in some weird and wonderful way they will decide how important your article is and rate it accordingly.

If you article is similar to other articles in some shape or form it may not be as well rated as if it is seen as being entirely unique after all, nobody wants to see the search results full of several articles that all appear to be saying the same thing in the same way.

For this reason I don't think it is such a good idea to rewrite articles you have already published and post them elsewhere on the internet. You may gain a backlink and backlinks are almost always good but what if your rewrite of the article is seen as being more important than your original article?

You could end up with the article directory or whatever other site you post to taking the search engine result spot you were hoping to get. Computers use algorithms to decide these things so a well respected article directory could well be seen as more important than your site so a similar article could easily push you out of the top search results.

You would, of course, get a decent backlink from a well rated page but that is clearly not as useful as having that page of yours appear in a good position in the search results.

It is a personal opinion but I would resist the temptation to rewrite and spread your versions of an article around the web and instead write a fresh article just for distribution purposes.

All you have to do is write an interesting article when you have some spare time. At first you may wonder why you haven't made any money but stick with it. Write more articles and over time you will find more visitors reading your pages and more clicks on adverts which make you money.

You get the benefit of being part of an authority site that google rates very well and your articles have every chance of appearing near the top of the search engines and getting traffic to your hubpages. All this costs you nothing at all and you avoid the problems of managing websites and servers and registering domain names. Before the internet appeared on the scene keywords would probably have been thought of as the important words in a speech or article but now keywords have a similar but far more important role.

When we talk about keywords we are talking about the words and phrases that people use that are specific to what they are looking for or what you are writing about on your blog or website. In this article the word "KEYWORDS" itself is the important keyword but keywords can mean a phase of 3,4 or even more words. It describes a word or words that people type in to a search engine search box and it is the word or words that you try to include in your web page title, heading and article so the search engines know what your page is about and, hopefully, they decide to rate your page well for that keyword and put you near the top of the search results when people search for that phrase.

The only problem is that we have no idea what people are searching for. You might think an article about 'trimming poodle toenails' will prove very popular but the reality may be that nobody, and I mean nobody, is searching for that particular phrase. The result will be that having slaved over your keyboard to produce a great article about that subject, nobody ever visits your web page. We need to know what people are looking for BEFORE we start writing that superb article for our website.

For some time now it has been possible to make use of the Google Keyword Tool to give you a lot of ideas but it has something of a reputation for inaccuracy when it comes to the numbers and it is limited in how many results it supplies you with. It is a whole lot better than nothing but we need something better to know what popular and more obscure search terms people really use.

Now the search engines care about this too. They want to make life easier for people using their search engines so they provide hints on what you might be searching for. When you start typing a search phrase on the main search engine pages it will pop up a list of things you might be searching for. These are lists of pages that people typed in before so we know these are popular search terms. If only we could capture all that valuable information.

In the past there wasn't a way to do this but now we can with a tool released by the highly regarded Jonathon Ledger who has a reputation fro producing top quality and reliable software tools to help webmasters achieve greater success. We talk about building traffic to our websites but the reality is we are trying to build up the popularity of the website. We need to make the website interesting enough that people have a reason to visit.

You can copy and past some of the content from a sales page on Amazon or Clickbank and add your affiliate link but what does that page offer a visitor that makes the page stand out in the search engines?

If you want to get the free traffic from search engines your page needs to be different. Forget about duplicate content penalties and whether they really exist or not. The true penalty is that if you have the same page as several other people there is no reason for the search engines to put your page in front of the others.

The last thing the search engines like Google want to do is display a page of very similar results. They go to great lengths to provide accurate and appropriate results because they know the person searching does not want ten results all giving the same information.

If you do something different and offer a slightly different interpretation of that same information together with your own opinions on the product or service you have a chance of making your page stand out from all the others.

You are reading this page because it offers you my opinion of a subject. You would not read it if it was the same as five other pages you already read today. It may not make the first page of the search engines for any particular term but at least it is different.

Search engines do not hate you and they are not trying to prevent you achieving success with your online business. It may feel like that sometimes but the reality is that they are in business too and their business is satisfying the people who use their websites so they continue to use them again and again.

You should try to do the same. Make sure that your pages offer your visitor something worth looking at. Make sure that your visitors would be happy to use your site again another time. Offer them a worthwhile experience.

Time seems to be in short supply these days because there are so many things we do and ways of using it. Most people do not want to spend their lives reading junk on the internet. Most want to find what they are looking for quickly and easily so, if your site can help them achieve that aim and they either click on an advert or buy a solution through your website both you and they will be happy.

All the backlinks in the world don't make a web page worth visiting so make sure that whatever page you are promoting with articles, blog comments and all the other ways people promote websies, just make sure there is something worthwhile for the visitors and web traffic that you get.

If you were a mountaineer climbing a vertical cliff what would you be thinking about? I would guess you would be 100% focused on the cliff face and where your next hand or foothold was. It would be the same if you were walking the high wire. You would not be spending your time on a forum about how to walk the high wire you would be focusing on your next step and your balance.

So it should be the same with your online business. Concentrate on what you are doing. Don't get distracted by an email offering the latest internet marketing product. If you must, you can set aside some time of day to do that later but right now, you should be working.

Is reading this blog working? It may be if it helps you progress your online business and helps you to focus after reading this article but how many blogs will you read? How many forums will you spend time on? We all know how doing anything on a computer can seem like a time sink. You sit down full of good intentions but get distracted from what you were intending to do and before you know it two hours have gone by and you still haven't got started on what you meant to be doing.

We all need a break every now and again. It can help you concentrate if you allow a few minutes relaxing every hour or so but don't let that few minutes of browsing the web turn into a whole afternoon or evening if you seriously want to develop your online business.

There are a few downloadable tools that will set timers for you so you can allocate a certain period of time to a task and these time management tools help some people stay focused on the task in hand but they are just support and the real challenge is to train yourself to be focused and self disciplined about your work.

Do you know any lazy successful people? There may be a lucky few but most, even those that like to appear otherwise, are serious hard workers when they are working but thanks to their singlemindedness they get on with the task in hand, get it done and then relax and chill out. That is a good model to follow so buckle down and do what you have planned and then relax and read the blogs and forums if that is what you want to do to relax.

Just about everyone online tells us that we should all be using wordpress because it is quick and easy to use and also because Google loves it. I am a big fan of WordPress myself and I use it for many different blogs. This site is a wordpress blog and I have no plans to change that anytime soon. But... my experience recently makes me wonder if wordpress is always the right choice.

I have a website in a pretty competitive market. I purchased the site a couple of years ago and it has been sitting around the number 5 position for searches for it's main keyword pretty much ever since. I never did anything to promote or develop that website. Maybe I added a couple of backlinks but literally just a dozen or two. It was a plain and fairly ugly html website and all I ever did was to change a couple of the affiliate links. I am not even sure if I changed all of them, that's how little work I did to the site.

Earlier this year I decided I should spend some time and completely revamp the site and I decided to put it on a wordpress blog. I spent several days setting up the blog and transferring all the articles over to the new blog. This was a month or so ago and I recently checked my Google results. What did I find? The website that has been consistently in the top ten search results for the last two years has all but disappeared from the first page. Before the change there were a few dozen keywords showing up on the first page for searches there now appears to be only one and that is at position number ten!

So what are we to make of this? I am disappointed. As far as I am concerned I have improved the site. The articles are almost identical to the original html versions but the site looks better and I have added more pages, information and offers. WordPress blogs have more code to make up the page than a simple html website with various links and menus and I wonder if this has reduced the value G sees in the site which, if true, would suggest that a simple site with less code is more effective in the eyes of the big G searchbot.

This is something I need to investigate further but right now I am regretting transferring the site over to WordPress. I had planned to work through many of my sites and change them over to WP but now I think that might be unwise. Maybe I should have tried it out first with a less successful site as this is obviously costing me money in lost revenues now but I do like WordPress with it's ease of use and appearance so I will persevere for now and hope that this is a temporary setback but the lesson must surely be this. Just because lots of people tell you WP is the best thing since sliced bread don't assume that is always the case. As always, test and test again to establish what works best for you and your websites.

I have this theory, as yet unproven. The easier it is to do something the less it is rated by Google. So, easy to get backlinks would be of less value than hard to get backlinks. Easy to build website, i.e. wordpress blog, less value than html sites. You would think that what is basically the same site would be rated basically the same by the search engines but apparently not so something has been downgraded and it would appear to be the platform used to produce the site.

You quite often see successful and experienced marketers commenting or complaining about how negative a lot of people are on forums when talking about making money online. They have a point and there is a lot of negativity out there. Oftentimes the negativity is unfair in relation to the specific product or technique being discussed but while in any situation there will be both positive and negative people I think there is a particular reason why there is so much negative opinion around.

How many times have you bought a product that gave you the impression that it would help you make your fortune? How many fortunes have you made? Not too many I bet. Some will always achieve success but for many it seems to elude them whatever they buy and whatever they do.

Almost every internet marketing product claims to be the solution to your financial worries and when you hand over you money you sort of have the feeling that you will make your money back time and time again. If that doesn't happen and you buy product after product and it never seems to do anything other than empty your wallet it can make you very cynical and very negative.

It has become common practice that after you agree to buy one product you are offered yet another as an 'upsell' at a special price. It makes good sense for the seller to try to encourage you to buy more while you are in the buying mood. Sometimes the upsell really will help to automate or assist with the main product being sold but if you have been sold on the idea that the main product is the solution to making a success of your online enterprise and making lots of money you would be right to question whether you should need anything else.

So often, it seems, the marketers who are claiming to make so much money are doing so by selling you stuff about how to make money online. Nothing new here as selling the idea of how to get rich has always been a lucrative business in the offline world for decades, perhaps hundreds of years.

The classic tale of this type of business is the advert in the newspaper or magazine that offers to sell you the secret to how to make a few hundred or thousand dollars so you send off your $10 or whatever and back comes a single sheet of paper with the secret information. It tells you to put an advertisement in the paper offering to sell the secret to making money for ten dollars.

Maybe the crazy thing is that it can work, you proved it by sending the ten dollars off but the point is that by appealing to eager and even desperate people you can sell them on a dream and deliver very little.

If you read some of the guides sold on how to make money on the internet you will be told to produce your own product in as little as three days. They say it doesn't matter if you don't know the subject you are writing about just knock something out and start selling it. I don't know about you but when I buy a book in an offline bookstore I expect that author to have slaved over that book for rather more than a couple of days and I expect them to know something about their subject matter.

There is so much trash being published online now that people will be turned off by the idea of ebooks. If you bought an ebook written in pigeon English by someone who doesn't understand the subject matter you would be extra cautious the next time you were tempted to spend money.

There is a lot of good stuff out there that can help you make money online but there is also a lot of poor quality information that may only explain a small part of an overall business plan yet it is sold as being the solution to your money worries for life. Other guides are sold that may have passed the time when they were effective at doing what they claim to do. What worked well two years ago may not be so effective now, not least because there are so many people who have been persuaded they can make money online and are proceeding to produce blogs and websites. The competition is intense.

The reality is that it gets harder to make money online and you have to be smarter than the next guy. you need to understand how to market products and you need to promote your websites and blogs. You need to learn but you need to be cautious of claims of rapid success. It can happen and probably happens every day for someone but it is also probably true that someone wins a lottery everyday somewhere but the odds are against any particular individual being the winner.

There is a lot of free information online that will help you build a business online. Focus on one plan and stick with it for a while to see if it achieves some results for you. Most systems work if you persevere. Article marketing, blog commenting and taking part in forums will all help build visitor numbers on your website but if you just do a bit and then sit back it may not work out so good.

You need to be focused on what you plan to do and get on and do it. Thinking about doing it won't make you wealthy.
