Penguin and Panda Bring More Change To Search Results

There was a very significant update to the Google search engine algorithm on the 25th April which has created quite an uproar in the internet marketing community. It was intended to affect sites that were overly Search Engine Optiized or sites that had excessive spammy type links to them.

Google continue to search for the best way of providing what their customers are looking for. The visitor to Google is looking for something and the big G is trying to give them the best results they can. It can be hard to be an internet marketer because you often feel that you are fighting Google rather than working with them. The reverse view of this is that to an internet marketer it can sometimes feel that Google is picking on you and trying to prevent you making an honest living.

This is obviously not the case. Google simply doesn't care about you or your website. Think of the search engines as automatic mechanical systems. They have no feelings or emotions. They are entirely focused on achieving their objectives. There is nothing personal about any effect of changes to their search algorithm.

Unfortunately many of the IM Gurus have led beginners down a path that worked for a while but is finally being blocked off. Spamming techniques that gained a lot of backlinks appeared to be the answer but clearly no longer. Sites that used these techniques are now being penalised for having all those spammy links pointing back to them which leads to a difficult situation. If you have no control over the links pointing back to your site you cannot remove them and it may be the penalty they cause may last for some time, perhaps years.

It is hard to know what to suggest to anyone who has had a site penalised in this way. It may be that if you do the right thing, according to Google, that slowly the sites will recover and the effects of those spammy links will be reduced. Write good and unique content for the visitor and pay less attention to the on page SEO. Concentrate less on getting lots of keywords into your articles and pay more attention to giving useful and informative articles to your visitor.

Google has always claimed they are interested in giving the internet searcher what they are looking for. Your job as an internet website publisher is to give the visitor what they want too. If that means they are not hammered by a million adverts and pop-ups that will be a better experience for your visitor and they are more likely to return to your site another time and recommend it to their friends.

The internet is changing, as it constantly does, but now more than ever you need to listen to what the search engines say they want for their visitors if you are to achieve success by gaining visitors from the search engines. Try to work with Google rather than fight them. Try to help your visitors rather than sell to them.

Google Asked To Alter Auto Suggest Results By Japanese Court

A Japanese court has asked Google to make changes to their auto suggest results to prevent a Japanese man fromhaving his name linked to a crime he did not commit.

The court was told that when the mans name was entered into the Google search request box the auto complete suggestions included at least one with his name associated with a crime that was nothing to do with him. The court decided that Google to request make changes to prevent this occuring as it was causing damage to his name and reputation by providing such a suggestion.

Google is reported as considering the result of the court case but they will presumably not want to flout a request from a court though it could lead to enormous numbers of requests to make further ammendments by other people and organizations who may feel they suffer similar damage to their reputations.

Spinning Articles Can Produce Poor Quality Content For Your Site

Spinning articles and publishing them all over the web has become a popular way to try to gain additional backlink pointing back to your website. A few years ago it was a time consuming process doing it all manually but these days there are some excellent programs around that can do it all almost automatically.

These article spinning programs work pretty well and they come with huge databases of all sorts of synonyms that can replace your original words and make the article appear very different. Whether they appear different enough to confuse the search engines into thinking it is genuine work remains to be seen.

It would not surprise me one little bit to discover that Google is more than capable of deconstucting such a spun article and seeing that it is actually a common article that has been spun. Whether they could be bothered to do that for every webpage and whether they really care that much is a question we will probably never have an answer to but from what they do say I doubt they are keen on spun content.

Now it is so easy to spin articles in a matter of seconds it does seem to make people lazy. Many users of spinning software do not seem to take much trouble to check the results. You could hardly check every single result if you are pumping out thousands of articles from one original but I constantly find myself reading gobbledegook on websites and you just know that somebody has been busy spinning some PLR article and churning them out all over the place.

If you come across an article like that it does make you instantly assume the website is likely to be rubbish too. This could easily have played a part in some of the previously well ranked sites falling down the search results because they have what appears to be a spun article on them.

I also wonder if possibly good quality articles on good quality sites might have been copied into spinners by people who have few morals and then the resultant tsunami of junky articles could possibly reflect badly on the original article as there would be many similarities in the spammy spun content elsewhere. It could partially explain why many good websites were so badly affected by the various Panda updates at Google.

The thing that provoked me to write this article was when I was reading a page on a website today and I came across the phrase, "someone inhaling and exhaling down your right back" in the middle of a sentence. Almost certainly that is a spun version of 'having someone breathing down your neck'

These spinning programs are very capable of finding alternative words and phrases but they do not always make much sense to a human and this appears to be a case in point. The rest of the article was not so bad but as soon as I saw that line I knew it had to be spun content and I left the site.

It may be that people who put out thousands of spun articles don't care too much about the quality but if you are publishing the article on your website you should make sure it reads like it was written by a human being and not by a monkey or a computer program.

Most of the time websites are checked out by bots sent out from the search engines and maybe they don't notice poor use of the English Language but f ever that site gets a human review I would expect it will suffer some sort of penalty in the search engines.

You want to try to keep publishing fresh content to attract the search engines but if it is rubbish you may not gain much benefit from poorly spun articles on your site.

What Is Going On With Google Panda Updates?

Google has become the major player in the search pages used by the majority of the Western world. This has placed it in a significant position of power and changes lately make you wonder if that power is beginning to be missused, intentionally or otherwse. Since the first Panda updates back in the Spring websites have been hit left right and center. In many cases these are decent websites that desreve to appear in a decnt ranked position in the search results but good sites have been almost wiped out by the changes Google has made.

It is hard to see what the benefits are. There are many reports of scraped and copied content appearing in a much higher ranked position than the original authors content. It makes no sense.

The search engiines claim to always be looking for the most rellevent results for their customers and, I guess, for other reasons sometimes the copied content looks better to them. With a few additional keywords sprinkled around the page like fairy dust a copied article may seem to be a better result to the search engine bots. It is totally unfair on the original author though and arguably providing a less impressive website for the search engine user to visit.

Many people would claim that the whole debacle of the Panda updates has been a disaster for Google, for their customers and for the website owners who put a lot of effort into producing decent articles and information for their website visitors.

Hubpages is an example of a good site that has thousands of users who publish articles on the website and in exchange get a percentage of any advertising payments. There are a large number of excellent authors providing very good quality content. There are thousands of well researched and well written articles that any visitor would be delighted to discover and read.

The first Panda update decimated the traffic to the hubpages website. The further updates, and there have been several, have done little to help Googles users find the good quality sites that exist on Hubpages website. The reverse is true.

The owners of the Hubpages website have taken all sorts of steps to try to clean out any poor quality hubs. They have stopped people linking to anything that might be seen as poor quality site. The restricted sites include such established players as clickbank presumably due to the large numbers of make money today schemes offered there alongside the good quality ebooks, videos and CDs.

A recent move to using subdomains on Hubpages appeared to have turned things around but in the last week or so many of the good quality hubpages have disappeared from the search engine results. Who knows what the reason is this time. It may be that since the subdomains have all suddenly appeared Google have sandboxed them for a few months thinking their sudden appearanc is suspicious.

Who knows what is going on in the great google mind in the sky. Whatever their intentions when they introduced the Panda updates it seems that the effects have been a disaster for their search results and for thousands, and perhaps millions, of enthusiastic authors of webpages and articles all over the world.

It is depressing to find that putting the effort in to writing good quality articles is wasted. Google does not appear to want quality. Their robotic analysis appears to favor junk over quality. It is so disheartening to find that thanks to a damn computer the common sense decisions of what is good or not has been turned on its head. No longer is quality a good thing. Rubbish is now better just so long as it has the features that the google robots are looking for. It could be complete jibberish but that would not seem to matter in the eyes of Google.

None of us knows for sure what it is that causes Google to rate one page higher than another. It may be that the pages with videos from Youtube get a better ranking because Google owns youtube. It could be the number of keywords or the variety of similar keywords. Perhaps it is down to the percentage of keywords compared to the number of words on a page. We simply don't know but in my opinion, at the moment, Google is not doing a very good job for their customers. Maybe having poor search engine results means they get more adwords clicks on the search pages.

There are businesses that provided a perfectly good service for their visitors who have been decimated by these changes and many decent poeple are suffering thanks to Google and its whims. Such irresponsibility is to be expected. Google is a private company. They have no duty the the world other than their shareholders and it may be the changes have been very profitable but it has made the internet a less useful place for the users and has made producing good quality content a waste of time for website owners and authors. Let us hope that for the good of the internet Google changes their direction and begins to put quality first before we all disappear in a swamp of poor quality webpages that the intoduction of Adsense started.

Another ‘Must Have’ Product For Just $37

There's a new kid on the block and in boxes all over the world are being filled to overflowing with offers to encourage you to sign up through their link.

Mass Something or other is being offered today at $37 it seems and everyone and his brother thinks you should buy it. The best offer on bonuses I saw so far is for about $3000 worth of products. On a $37 product? Are you kidding me?

There are only 200 copies of this software available. 200*$37=$7400 for the lot. Half of that will go on commissions to the affiliates. What crap is this?

It seems that products offered these days are all about the marketing and very little about the product. I guess that is one way to make money but it makes little sense to me.

I have no idea what this product is or does. The sales page & obligatory video of course, doesn't really answer any questions other than to say you just click and make thousands of dollars. If the seller is on;y making $7,400 on the deal maybe he should try using it himself and making a bit more than that in a day or two, according to his previous results he talks about.

I am sick of these crappy offers that tell you virtually nothing about the product and claim to have a limited number available which I just don't believe is true. It's all crap and on the basis of that I assume the product is crap too. It may be brilliant but using techniques like this makes me think it is just more rubbish to be added to hard drives everywhere so successful marketers can have a good life while all the poor struggling wanna-be's pay out yet more money and never make a dime.

If you want to buy it go ahead but keep in mind the refund guarantee and make use of it if the product is not as good as you hoped for.

Article Directory Backlinks

There are plenty of article directory websites you can upload your own unique content to and include a backlink pointing back to your own website.

This trade off is fair for both sides. The article directory gets content for their website and you get a decent backlink pointing to the webpage you wish to promote.

There are thousands of these article directories out there. The biggest are probably ezine articles and go articles but they all carry the same benefits though the bigger ones are higher authority websites but there are so many thousands of pages the link juice may be spread more thinly.

There are plenty of smaller article directory website, such as Headflip.com which may well grow over time and allow your well established article to gain considerable weight and authority in the long term.

Rewrite And Distribute Articles Or Not?

When you publish an article on your website or blog you hope the world will want to come and read it. You can put your heart and soul into that article but at the end of the day, it is the search engines who will decide how much traffic you get and how many people read the article.

The search engines will evaluate your site and the article and in some weird and wonderful way they will decide how important your article is and rate it accordingly.

If you article is similar to other articles in some shape or form it may not be as well rated as if it is seen as being entirely unique after all, nobody wants to see the search results full of several articles that all appear to be saying the same thing in the same way.

For this reason I don't think it is such a good idea to rewrite articles you have already published and post them elsewhere on the internet. You may gain a backlink and backlinks are almost always good but what if your rewrite of the article is seen as being more important than your original article?

You could end up with the article directory or whatever other site you post to taking the search engine result spot you were hoping to get. Computers use algorithms to decide these things so a well respected article directory could well be seen as more important than your site so a similar article could easily push you out of the top search results.

You would, of course, get a decent backlink from a well rated page but that is clearly not as useful as having that page of yours appear in a good position in the search results.

It is a personal opinion but I would resist the temptation to rewrite and spread your versions of an article around the web and instead write a fresh article just for distribution purposes.
